Childhood obesity in the United States is an epidemic. It is a crisis. It is a severe threat to health. This is not a myth, and it is not something that can be ignored. The numbers tell the story, and the risks are real.

Over the past 30 years, the childhood obesity rate has either doubled or tripled for American children and adolescents.[1] Approximately 9 million American children today over age 6 are considered obese. In addition to the negative psychological impact that being obese can have on children, obesity often has a serious impact on a child"s physical health. Childhood obesity increases the lifetime risk of type 2 diabetes, and it increases the chance of having elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, and blood pressure -- all risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

In the fall of 2004, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report that called for action at many levels to deal with the problem of childhood obesity.[2] Success will require action by families, by individuals, by schools, by communities, and by healthcare providers. Action will be needed by food purveyors, manufacturers, and restaurants, and by city designers so that people can get the exercise they need.[3]
